Winter is nearly with us and the temperature is dropping! so there is no time like the present for an oak fireplace!

Having a floating fireplace beam means you don’t require any corbels or unsightly brackets, and as long as the beam is being fitted to a brick wall or equivalent the fixing is as strong as both options.

The fitting kit consists of:

• Holes drilled to the back of the beam sufficient with the size and weight.
• Threaded  steel rod cut to length required for the holes.
• All purpose bonding resin to hold the rods in the beam, and in the wall.

Once fitted a floating beam gives a modern look but keeping the beautiful charachter of an oak fireplace.

The kit is priced at £25 + VAT

One thing was mentioned that we did not have a page showing the finishes available on our oak beams. This prompted me to go about creating one.

I have made sure I have finished various beams in all the waxing/oiling aesthetic options we do. I have taken pictures to show the typical finishes.

Please be aware though that especially with the reclaimed oak all the beams are different in their own way. So while we will strive to give you exactly what you are looking for from our choices, variations in texture and colour will occur.

The customer wanted to the room ceiling to look traditional but still fresh. With this in mind the decision was made to go with air dried oak beams to keep the colour fairly light but still have a traditional rustic feel.

Hand Selected Oak Beams

After design decisions and measurements were taken we hand selected the oak beams for the job and began hollowing them out. The hollowing process requires the centre of the oak beam to be removed; this is done to begin with by chainsaw and then finished by hand with hammer and chisel. When hollowing for cladding we have to make sure that there is at least 2 inches (50mm) left on the oak beam to keep the strength in the oak beam itself but to also keep rigidity.

Delivery included

We delivered the oak beams as part of the service and had a site meeting with the builders to give advice and guidance to fitment.

As you can see, now the oak is fitted it really gives the room a great look. Making a very grand room for what will be a very grand residence.

All of the joints from the main doorway truss to the rafters have been hand cut. With new green oak this is pretty straight forward, but with the uneven surface of reclaimed oak all the edges of the joints have to be painstakingly scribed in so there are no gaps. When finally erected all joints have been drilled and pegged in the traditional oak framing method.
