From Garage to Kitchen: Crafting a Seamless Oak-Framed Extension

Several years ago, we had the privilege of building a large oak-framed garage and workshop for a client. Impressed with our work, the client and his wife later invited us to create an oak-framed extension to their home. This addition included a new kitchen and a snug, forming a stunning oak-framed link between the main house and an existing annexe.

Working alongside the clients and their architect from the very start, we ensured that every detail was carefully considered. The local architects, highly experienced in oak framing, produced the plans and obtained all the necessary planning permissions. Trad Oak then created 3-D images to help the clients visualise the structure, ensuring they were comfortable with the design’s aesthetic and could make any adjustments before construction. To guarantee the strength and safety of the design, a specialist structural engineer confirmed the integrity of the oak frame.

Our client, having a senior background in the construction industry, chose to personally project-manage the build. Once all permissions were secured, Trad Oak began the precise fabrication of the oak frame, meticulously measured to fit the foundations.

The frame was produced in our workshop, where we pre-fitted the mortice and tenon joints before disassembling and marking it for reassembly. Once the builder had completed the necessary dwarf walls, brickwork, and stonework, we transported the oak components to the site. Reassembling the frame on-site was a swift process, as all the intricate work had already been completed in our workshop.

With the oak frame securely in place, the builder took over to finish the remainder of the construction, including the infill work. The project was a seamless collaboration, resulting in a beautifully crafted oak-framed extension that blended perfectly with the existing property.

If you’re considering an oak-framed project, rest assured that you don’t need any prior experience or knowledge. At Trad Oak, we offer all the expertise, skills, and contacts necessary to guide you through the entire process, ensuring your vision comes to life with ease.

After completing a project for a customer, we were left with some rather lovely pieces of high-quality joinery oak. Rather than letting these beautiful offcuts go to waste, we decided to try our hand at crafting a prototype breadboard. We wanted to see if we could make use of the smaller sections of leftover timber […]
Transforming an old, shabby-looking reclaimed oak beam into a stunning oak fireplace mantel is a process that blends revival and craftsmanship. Each piece tells a story of time gone by, bringing a touch of history and character into modern homes. At the heart of this transformation lies the raw material – the reclaimed oak beam […]
